Senior Data Engineer

The Senior Data Engineer is a Big Data Cloud specialist that designs, supports and develops Big Data solutions, on technical developments across the Aviva Data Platform. The ideal candidate is a commercially aware technical expert who can influence and interpret a high level requirement into a low level technical solution and then deliver the required solution/s in an appropriate timescale to the requisite quality.

What will you be doing?

• Implements ETL processes using Big Data technologies
• Ensures the implemented processes are coherent, efficient and support the strategy for data architecture within Aviva
• Works with analysis and design teams to propose high level solutions that effectively meet business need in conjunction with lead development designers.
• Manages their delivery of technical solutions aligned to high level design (through both waterfall and Agile methodologies).
• Proactively identify improvements required within existing Big Data solutions and work with Delivery Managers, Solution Designers and Application Leads to propose, plan and deliver any remediation work required
• Monitors performance of ETL jobs and proactively makes improvements where required.
• Work with business/technical experts on business teams where low level requirements are complex in order to determine solutions to required logic or business rules

What we’re looking for?

Ideally:

• Approx. 5+ years of experience in data engineering or data modelling, data processing, solution development; similar experience is beneficial (data science, Java development etc.) 
• Experience with technologies: Python, Scala/Java, SQL, Snowflake
• Skilled in the use of Cloud tools, such as: AWS (especially: EMR, S3, SQS, Lambda, Redshift, Glue, Kinesis) and frameworks Hadoop, Spark
• Experience with data pipeline development, ETL processes, and data warehousing 
• Good verbal and written communication skills enabling effective interaction with both IT and Business stakeholders. 
• Organised (work management of self and others) and self-motivated. 
• Ability to assimilate technical and business information and to help translate these into practical solutions. 
• Ability to positively challenge existing and proposed solutions and present designs and ideas   in a clear, concise way. 
• Familiarity with software solution development lifecycles. 

Nice to have:

• Some awareness of financial services industry and processes would be highly beneficial.
