About the role

The Senior Commercial Analyst will drive the development of market analytics for Trading and Shipping and the wider Ampol business (e.g., Strategy, Refining, Finance). The Senior Commercial Analyst will keep track of market developments and develop actionable insights that inform the relevant groups and influence commercial decisions. The Senior Commercial Analyst will also drive the delivery of the Data Analytics Project roadmap by collaborating with other relevant teams (IT integration, data scientists, product manager, data engineers) as a subject matter expert to enhance the data analytics capabilities of the commercial analysis team. In this role you'll have the opportunity to work across products, advise on our ongoing Data Analytics project as the SME and oversee Freight. This is a unique role in the market and requires a highly skilled Senior Commercial Analyst.

Key responsibilities

• Subject matter expert in oil markets, who will drive the continual development/improvement of market analytics capabilities and infrastructure in Ampol.
• Collaborate with other team members to perform across-the-barrel / inter-product analysis
• Leverage on strong understanding of across-the-barrel market fundamentals, dynamics and instruments available to deliver actionable insights/analysis and drive engagement with the trading desks on trade strategy, including identification of trading recommendations, challenge to market views, and position risks.
• Drive the delivery of the Data Analytics Project roadmap by leading workstreams to enhance the modelling, visualization and data analytics capabilities of the commercial analysis team. Provide subject matter expertise to the Actionable Insights team (including data scientists), data product team (including data engineers and data product manager) and more junior team members to design, implement, validate and support existing and new models/tools, and use them to improve supply & demand models and generate tradeable insights.
• Conduct research and analysis of historical trading data, market fundamentals, economic indicators etc., to identify trading opportunities and potential risks          •            Publish weekly and monthly market commentary with inputs from other team members.
• Improve and optimise impact of information captured from participation in the physical and derivative market.
• Engage with Trading and Shipping, Strategy, Business Development, or other parts of Ampol where relevant to share market developments and insights through various platforms and channels, improving reporting as required
• Where relevant, perform topical analysis and support ad-hoc analytics requests from Trading and Shipping, Strategy, or Business Development.
• Provide mentorship and develop the market analysis capability of team members and other analytics functions across Ampol.

Qualifications & Experience

• Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline
• Minimum of 7-9 years of market analysis experience, preferably in a commodity trading environment.

Knowledge & Skills

• Demonstrate strong market analysis capability and experience.
• Self-starter with a drive for results and able to work independently.
• Excellent communication skills with an ability to engage traders, lead discussions and influence change.
• Commitment to deliver continuous improvement and enhance existing analysis.
• Ability to manage complex and technical arguments.
• High level understanding of business drivers and key areas of influence.
• Excellent organisational skills, able to prioritise and work in a changing environment.
• Leadership qualities, willingness to share knowledge, coach and guide team members
• Excellent Excel skills, VBA, Python and SQL knowledge will be an advantage.
• Good knowledge of PowerBI or other visualisation tools
