Microsoft is experiencing unprecedented cloud growth, and the Cloud Operations + Innovations organization (CO+I) is at the center of this growth,whose broad goals are to automate and optimize the planning, construction, operation and decommissioning of Microsoft Data Centers (DC) across the planet.


The Cloud Applied Artificial Intelligence (CAAI) team that sits within Cloud Operations and Innovations Engineering (CO+IE) is seeking a passionate and talented Senior Applied Scientist. The CO+IE team provides engineering support to the CO+I organization and CAAI’s mission is to identify and solve complex, high-impact problems that can augment and substantially improve CO+I operations and functions. The services our team provides includes scientific consulting, identification and mitigation of process/data gaps, and the development of pipelines, frameworks, and software products (statistical, optimization, AI/ML based) to automate and optimize CO+I business functions.

As a Applied Scientist II within the CAAI team, you will work in a role filled with ambiguity and opportunities, in a domain that includes planning, construction, operation and decommissioning of DCs. You will have a special focus on LLM (Large Language Model) and GenAI and the day-to-day responsiblity involved with identifying business impacting questions, generating vision statements, providing scientific exploration and developing LLM based solutions to address these questions. As such, the ideal candidate will have experience with the recent development of LLM technologies and be interested in/excited about continuously expanding their horizons. You can also expect to collaborate with a rapidly growing team of talented applied scientists and software engineers to bring these solutions to life and substantially impact customer experience.

Responsibilities

  • You will work one or more subareas and gain expertise in a broad area of research, including applicable research techniques. You’ll also gain deep knowledge of a service, platform, or domain, pertaining to Large Language Model (LLM) and identify product needs by sharing the latest industry trends and applied technologies.
  • You will review business requirements and incorporate research to meet business goals. You‘ll provide strategic direction for the kinds of data used to solve problems and apply deep subject matter knowledge to support business impact.
  • You will participate in onboarding of other early career team members and assist in developing academics to be members of multidiscipline teams. You’ll identify new research talent to join Microsoft and collaborate with the academic community to develop the recruiting pipeline.
  • You will document work in progress and experimentation results and share findings to promote innovation. You’ll also use your deep understanding of fairness and bias to contribute to ethics and privacy policies related to research processes and data collection.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 2+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field
    • OR equivalent experience.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • o OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • o OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)
    • o OR equivalent experience.
  • 1+ year(s) experience creating publications (e.g., patents, peer-reviewed academic papers).

 

Applied Sciences IC3 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $98,300 - $193,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $127,200 - $208,800 per year.
